Women's Sports Gear I Need
Steve Pimental
When I wrote my New Year’s resolutions all the way back in December, one of the first things on my list was to buy more women’s sports gear. It was a somewhat ridiculous resolution since, by any objective measure, I own a crazy amount of women’s sports apparel. I have t-shirts, jerseys, scarves, shoes, hats, and hoodies. I even have a Chicago Red Stars golf shirt. No one has ever met me and said, “You know what you need, Steve, is more women’s sports merch.”
And yet, I still don’t have enough. We are blessed to live in a time with more women’s sports than ever before, and those sports are selling merch in a way that was hard to imagine 10 or even five years ago. Back then, anything outside of the WNBA’s iconic hoodie was difficult to find. Even at games, there would be sparse options, especially in men’s sizes. We are only six years removed from Sabrina Ionescu’s jersey selling out on draft night because the WNBA store underestimated demand, and now there are so many options that I can have a closet full of gear and still have enough that I want to fill an entire article. So that is what we are doing today. These are just things that have caught my eye that I am saving my pennies to buy without racking up credit card debt. I don’t have any deals with any of these leagues and get nothing out of it except for highlighting some things I think look cool, and also offer opportunities to support these sports that we love. So, in no particular order, this is the women’s sports gear I need.
LOVB hoodie
Every time I see an ad for LOVB’s Buy One Get One 50% off sale, it gets harder and harder to keep my credit card in my wallet. I think one of the reasons I haven’t pulled the trigger on a LOVB hoodie is that there are so many that I like, it is impossible to pick just one. I’m leaning towards the LOVB Volleyball Next Major League™ Rose Hoodie. As well as the LOVB Backronym Hoodie, but there are a few LOVB Madison hoodies I have my eye on, too.
2. LOVB Madison Scarf
I don’t want to get into too much team-specific merch in this article, but one of the reasons I bring up this scarf is that I think all the LOVB team scarves really pop. I have said in the past that LOVB has the best color schemes of any sports league I have ever seen, and they especially stand out in their scarves. I think scarves are a great, relatively cheap way to support a team or league, especially if you live somewhere like Chicago that is freezing cold roughly eight months of the year (don’t check me on that), and LOVB’s scarves may be the best I have seen.
3. Adidas D.O.N. Issue #7 'Aliyah Boston Virgin Islands PE' Basketball Shoes
I just saw that Dick’s Sporting Goods has these in my size, so I may own a pair of these shoes by the time you are reading this. I tend to wear a lot of blue jeans and dark-colored shirts, so I like it when my shoes add a splash of color. You cannot deny that these shoes do that. I think they look great anyway, but hearing Aliyah describe the blue representing water and the orange representing the sunrise just makes me like them that much more.
There is really no excuse for me not to have her signature shoe while she still plays for my team, which may not be the case once the WNBA offseason begins in earnest. That being said, I still wear my A’Ones every chance I get, and I don’t know if I’m ready to buy more basketball shoes. I pretty much like all of the Angel Reese 1 colorways, though the new Unapologetically Angel may be my favorite.
5. WNBA Logo Hoodie
Nothing will ever top the iconic orange hoodie, but I love some of the other color options. The Sky blue with the yellow logo looks awesome, and not just because I’m a Chicago Sky fan. The purple with orange logo and mint green with the dark logo both look incredible.
6. Men's WNBA Antigua Black Logowoman Big & Tall Tribute Polo
The polo is definitely understated, but there is something to be said for that. I could definitely see myself wearing it on the golf course. Mostly, I just wanted to shout out the WNBA store for having an offering in big and tall sizes. I would love it if they offered a large-tall, but I wasn’t expecting to see anything in tall sizes, so I will take it.
7. LPGA Gear
The last time I looked for LPGA gear, I was underwhelmed by the offerings. I had a tie-dyed LPGA hoodie until I got an ink stain on it that I couldn’t get out. When I tried to find new LPGA merch to replace it, nothing caught my eye. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised when I recently visited lpgaproshop.com and saw that they appear to be revamping their site and merch. We’ll have to see what they have to offer, but I am optimistic that there will be plenty that LPGA fans can wear proudly.
